Wisdom and understanding

When we read the story of Solomon, it is interesting to see that David’s desire for Solomon was for him to enjoy wisdom and understanding (1 Chron 22:12). David, being a king and a man after GOD’s own heart, understood that the best thing to offer your child (or a Child of GOD) is GOD’s wisdom and understanding.

We can learn an important lesson from the life of Solomon. After taking over the throne as king, he was obedient to the words of David and when he had the opportunity to receive anything he wanted from GOD, he chose the very best thing: On that night God appeared to Solomon, and said to him, "Ask! What shall I give you?" And Solomon said to God: "You have shown great mercy to David my father, and have made me king in his place. Now, O Lord God, let Your promise to David my father be established, for You have made me king over a people like the dust of the earth in multitude. Now give me wisdom and knowledge, that I may go out and come in before this people; for who can judge this great people of Yours?" And God said to Solomon: "Because this was in your heart, and you have not asked riches or wealth or honor or the life of your enemies, nor have you asked long life--but have asked wisdom and knowledge for yourself, that you may judge My people over whom I have made you king-- wisdom and knowledge are granted to you; and I will give you riches and wealth and honor, such as none of the kings have had who were before you, nor shall any after you have the like" (2 Chron 1:7-12 NKJV).

This is a beautiful passage of scripture. Because Solomon had a heart for the promise of GOD to his father and wanted that promise to be established, he had but one desire: to obtain wisdom and understanding and to rightly judge and lead GOD’s people in GOD’s judgement. Because of this GOD not only granted him wisdom and understanding, but also riches, wealth and honour.

May we also have the heart of a ‘Solomon’ – a heart that wants to be obedient to GOD’s plan and a people who want GOD’s view, judgement and opinion in all areas of our lives, so that GOD can be honoured as our FATHER.

This was also granted to us as the Christ generation, so let our hearts be encouraged: That their hearts may be encouraged, being knit together in love, and attaining to all riches of the full assurance of understanding, to the knowledge of the mystery of God, both of the Father and of Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge (Col 2:2-3).

Through our understanding of the mystery of GOD (that HE is our FATHER because we are HIS offspring, a Christ) we can enjoy the greatest gift from GOD our FATHER – which is to enjoy all wisdom and knowledge in Christ. This will ensure that HIS kingdom can come, whereafter all the other things will also be added.
